‘Veep’ star Julia Louis-Dreyfus keeps Emmys best comedic actress streak alive at 5

LOS ANGELES The second term for Veep But in accepting the award Sunday night, Louis-Dreyfus had a grim apology to induce:

“I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for the current political climate, ” Louis-Dreyfus said. ” Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started off as a political satire but it now feels more like a sobering documentary. So I surely do promise to re-build that wall … and induce Mexico pay for it.”

As now-President Selina Meyer, @OfficialJLD has five Best Actress trophies, bringing her total to seven. She’d also previously won the award once each for New Adventures of Old Christine ( 2006) and Seinfeld ( 1989 ). Louis-Dreyfus beat out Laurie Metcalf ( Getting On ), Tracee Ellis Ross ( Black-ish ), Amy Schumer ( Inside Amy Schumer ) and Lily Tomlin ( Grace and Frankie ). Though she couldn’t defy cracking a joke, Louis-Dreyfus had a moment of sincere emotion at the end of her speech, dedicating her latest win to her late parent. “Lastly I want to dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday, ” she said, breaking down in tears. “And I’m so glad that he liked Veep , because his opinion was the one that really mattered.
